Martha Ballard's World - A Fort Western Program for Adults

Fort Western Opens “2022 The Year of the Fort” celebration with Martha Ballard’s World: Wife, Mother, Healer, Botanist.
  Come join us on May 15, 2022, from 1pm to 4pm for a look into the life of a Colonial Woman in Hallowell, Maine. From 1pm to 3pm there will be rotating stations that centering around activities that Martha herself wrote about in her diary during the month of May.

  • At the kitchen hearth make cinnamon butter, and savory herbed butter for the scones to be served at the afternoon tea. Learn about where cinnamon and sugar came from, how it was processed, packaged, and shipped during the colonial period. Making and trading butter was a common activity of Martha’s.

  • Textiles played an important role in Martha and her daughters’ lives. Work different types of looms learn about fibers, and card and spin wool.

  • Martha often made candles for lighting her home.

  • In the Garden, learn about herbs and the plants available for the 18th century housewife for consumption and healing.

  • At 3 pm there will be an 18th Century tea in the south parlor of the Garrison where Martha actually came and often partook tea with Susanna Cony Howard (Judge James Howard, 2nd wife).
